Accessibility.

Our target

We aim for the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2, level AA, on every page of this site. We build sites for clients to the same standard, so we hold our own to it.

What we did

• Keyboard. Everything you can click can be reached and used with the keyboard, in a sensible order, with a visible focus ring. Menus and dialogs close with Escape.
• Structure. Pages use real headings, landmarks and lists, so screen readers can move around them.
• Contrast and colour. Text meets the AA contrast ratio in both the light and the dark theme. Colour is never the only way we show a state: errors also have an icon and words.
• Forms. Every field has a visible label. Errors are written in plain words, placed next to the field, and listed at the top of the form with links to each field. We do not use the browser’s own error bubbles, because they are not reliable for every reader.
• Text size. The layout adapts to small screens and to larger text sizes.
• Images. Meaningful images have text alternatives. Decorative drawings are hidden from screen readers.

Motion

If your device asks for reduced motion, the site shows still frames instead of animation. Nothing flashes. Animation is small and only one piece moves at a time; most of it plays once and rests. The assistant figures and colour backgrounds keep a slow, gentle motion, which reduced motion turns off.

How we test

We run automated accessibility checks and test by hand with the keyboard, in light and dark themes, and at phone and desktop widths. We have not yet had an outside audit, and we will say so here when we do.

Known limits

Some of our interactive line drawings respond to the pointer. They are decorative and every fact they illustrate is also in the text next to them. If you find a part of the site that does not work for you, that is a bug and we want to fix it.
